What is HBOT
Science-Backed
Oxygen Healing
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) delivers 100% medical-grade oxygen at 2–3× normal atmospheric pressure. Inside a pressurised chamber, oxygen dissolves directly into blood plasma — reaching tissues that even red blood cells cannot access.
This elevated oxygen concentration triggers the body’s own repair systems: new blood vessel formation, reduced inflammation, enhanced immune response, and accelerated tissue regeneration.

Questions
Everything you need to know about OHIP-covered hyperbaric oxygen therapy at Modern Medical.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a medical treatment where you breathe 100% pure oxygen inside a pressurized chamber at 2–3 times normal atmospheric pressure. This dramatically increases oxygen concentration in your blood and tissues, accelerating your body’s natural healing processes.
Under increased pressure, your lungs absorb significantly more oxygen than at normal air pressure. This oxygen-rich blood stimulates growth factors and stem cells, reduces inflammation, fights infection, and promotes new blood vessel formation in damaged tissue.
At Modern Medical, we use monoplace chambers — clear, tube-shaped chambers designed for one person. You can see out at all times, and our clinical team maintains visual and audio contact throughout your session.
As the chamber pressurizes, you may feel a temporary fullness in your ears — similar to airplane takeoff. Our technicians guide you through simple equalization techniques. Once at treatment pressure, most patients feel completely comfortable and relaxed.
HBOT has been used in clinical medicine for over 50 years. It is recognized by Health Canada, the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS), and provincial health insurance programs including OHIP, backed by decades of peer-reviewed research.
Yes, HBOT is considered very safe when administered by trained professionals. It is Health Canada–approved with a well-established safety profile. All sessions at Modern Medical are continuously monitored by certified hyperbaric specialists.
The most common side effect is temporary ear pressure during pressurization, similar to an airplane. Some patients experience mild fatigue. Less commonly, temporary nearsightedness may occur but resolves within weeks of completing treatment.
Ear discomfort during pressurization is manageable and usually mild. Our technicians teach equalization techniques before your first session and can slow the pressurization rate if needed. Eardrum injury is uncommon with proper technique.
Some patients experience temporary mild nearsightedness during treatment. This occurs because increased oxygen can temporarily change the eye’s lens shape. The effect is reversible, typically resolving within 6–8 weeks after your final session.
Our monoplace chambers are made of clear acrylic so you can see the room at all times. You’re in constant communication with our team via intercom. Many patients watch videos or listen to music. A mild sedative can be prescribed if needed.
The only absolute contraindication is an untreated collapsed lung (pneumothorax). Relative contraindications include certain lung conditions, recent ear surgery, and some chemotherapy medications. Our physician reviews your full medical history before treatment.
Yes. OHIP covers HBOT for all 14 approved medical indications at no cost to eligible Ontario residents with a qualifying condition and physician referral. Modern Medical treats all 14 OHIP-approved conditions.
For patients with an OHIP-approved condition, treatment is fully covered — you pay nothing. At Modern Medical, we focus exclusively on OHIP-covered indications, so all eligible patients are treated at no cost.
WSIB may cover HBOT for workplace-related injuries within approved indications — such as crush injuries, thermal burns, or carbon monoxide poisoning. Our team assists with WSIB authorization and required documentation.
The OHIP-covered conditions are: non-healing wounds, delayed radiation injury, sudden hearing loss (ISSHL), osteomyelitis, compromised skin grafts/flaps, thermal burns, necrotizing soft tissue, air/gas embolism, carbon monoxide poisoning, clostridial myonecrosis, crush injury, decompression sickness, exceptional blood loss, and intracranial abscess.
Yes. A referral from a physician or nurse practitioner is required to begin OHIP-covered treatment. Your referring provider sends us the referral, and we schedule a consultation with our hyperbaric medicine team.
Yes. HBOT is one of the most effective adjunctive therapies for chronic non-healing wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers. Increased oxygen promotes new blood vessel growth, reduces swelling, and enhances infection fighting — all critical for wound closure.
HBOT is the gold-standard treatment for delayed radiation tissue injury, including radiation cystitis, proctitis, and osteoradionecrosis. It stimulates new blood vessel growth in radiation-damaged tissue. Many patients see significant improvement after 30–40 sessions.
HBOT is an evidence-based treatment for sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL), most effective when started within 14 days of onset. It increases oxygen delivery to the inner ear, reducing inflammation and supporting recovery. Early referral is critical.
Yes. HBOT is the primary treatment for significant CO poisoning. It rapidly displaces carbon monoxide from hemoglobin, restoring normal oxygen delivery and dramatically reducing the risk of delayed neurological complications.
HBOT is approved for chronic refractory osteomyelitis — bone infections unresponsive to standard treatment. High-oxygen environments enhance antibiotic effectiveness, stimulate immune function, and promote new bone growth.
Yes. HBOT reduces tissue swelling, preserves marginally viable tissue, and enhances oxygen delivery to injured areas with compromised blood flow. Early HBOT after crush injury can significantly reduce the need for amputation.
HBOT improves survival of compromised skin grafts and flaps by increasing tissue oxygenation and promoting new blood vessel formation. It can make the difference between graft survival and loss.
Eat a light meal 1–2 hours before and stay hydrated. Avoid alcohol and carbonated beverages for 4 hours prior, and caffeine on treatment days. Do not smoke during your treatment course — nicotine significantly reduces effectiveness.
You’ll be provided with 100% cotton scrubs — the safest material in an oxygen-enriched environment. Arrive without lotions, perfumes, or petroleum-based products. Jewelry, watches, hearing aids, and electronics must be removed.
For safety, personal items including electronics, phones, and jewelry cannot enter the chamber. Our monoplace chambers have entertainment systems for videos and music during your session. We provide everything you need.
Most patients feel normal or mildly relaxed. Some experience light fatigue or mild hunger, which is normal. You can resume regular activities immediately. Over multiple sessions, many patients notice reduced pain, decreased swelling, and accelerated healing.
Results vary by condition and severity. Some patients notice improvements within 5–10 sessions, while others see gradual progress over the full course. Wound patients often observe measurable changes within 2–3 weeks.
For many conditions, benefits of a completed course are long-lasting. New blood vessels and healed tissue remain after treatment. Outcomes depend on the underlying condition — wounds typically stay healed, while some patients may benefit from future sessions if symptoms recur.
Each session lasts approximately 90 minutes, including pressurization, treatment, and depressurization. Plan for about 2 hours total including preparation and post-session monitoring by our clinical team.
A typical course ranges from 20 to 40 sessions depending on your condition. Wound care often requires 30–40 sessions, while sudden hearing loss may need 10–20. Your physician develops a personalized treatment plan.
HBOT is typically administered once daily, Monday through Friday. Consistency is important — healing benefits build on each previous session. In emergencies like CO poisoning, treatments may be more frequent.
You change into cotton scrubs and settle into the chamber. It’s gradually pressurized — you may feel ear pressure. At treatment pressure, you breathe normally and relax. Afterward, the chamber depressurizes slowly and you’re free to go.
Yes, and we encourage it. Have a light meal 1–2 hours before to maintain stable blood sugar. Stay hydrated with water. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated beverages before treatment.
Yes. HBOT does not impair alertness or coordination. However, if prescribed a sedative for claustrophobia, arrange alternate transportation. Let our team know if you experience any unusual symptoms.
Ask your family doctor or specialist to send a referral to Modern Medical. Once received, we contact you to schedule a consultation with our hyperbaric physician who reviews your case and determines if HBOT is appropriate.
A physician referral is required at Modern Medical. This ensures thorough medical assessment and appropriate treatment. Contact our clinic and we can help guide the referral process.
Patients diagnosed with any of the 14 OHIP-approved conditions may qualify. Eligibility is confirmed during consultation with our hyperbaric physician, who reviews your diagnosis, history, and medications.
We schedule your consultation as quickly as possible after receiving your referral. For time-sensitive conditions like sudden hearing loss, we prioritize rapid assessment — early treatment significantly improves outcomes.
There is no strict age limit. HBOT can be safely administered to adults of all ages when medically indicated. Each patient undergoes thorough pre-treatment assessment to confirm that benefits outweigh any risks.
